The Eastern & Oriental Hotel (E&O) was first established in 1885 by the Sarkies Armenian brothers, the creators of Singapore’s Raffles Hotel. A legendary colonial-style beachfront luxury hotel in Southeast Asia, it is hailed as "the finest hotel east of the Suez Canal" and remains one of Malaysia’s oldest surviving luxury hotels. Nestled within the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town, Penang, the hotel faces the Andaman Sea directly and boasts an extensive seafront lawn.
The hotel consists of two main sections: the Heritage Wing (original heritage building) and the Victory Annexe. The Heritage Wing has been meticulously restored to preserve the original features of Victorian colonial architecture, featuring retro arcades, domed lobby, teak flooring and antique furnishings, brimming with nostalgic charm of a century ago. The Victory Annexe opened in 2013 with a contemporary classic design; most suites here come with balconies and offer sea views. Host to renowned literary icons such as Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling, it stands as an iconic luxury accommodation for cultural travellers visiting Penang.
This is an all-suite hotel with no standard guest rooms. All accommodation units are suites, totalling 232 suites.

Deposit Policy
- Deposit: A deposit will be collected upon check-in at RM300 per night, calculated based on the total length of stay.
- Accepted Payment Methods: Credit card, cash.
- Deposit Refund: The deposit will be refunded to the original payment account on the day of check-out. It generally takes 2–4 weeks for the funds to arrive, subject to the bank’s processing timeline.
Children & Extra Bed Policy
- Children Stay: Children of all ages are welcome.
- Adult Rate Policy: Guests aged 12 and above will be charged as adults.
**Children's Breakfast Charges**
- Breakfast for children under 6 years old is complimentary; discounted breakfast rate applies for children aged 6–12. Reference price for adult breakfast: approximately MYR88 per person (price subject to change, please check with the hotel front desk).
- Breakfast Type: Buffet breakfast, Western & Asian flavours.
- Baby Cot: Complimentary baby cots available, subject to availability. Please contact the hotel in advance for reservation.
- Extra Bed: Extra bed service is available at RM413 per person per night, payable on-site.
- Room Occupancy Limit: The maximum occupancy per suite is subject to the limit stated for each room type. Please consult the hotel for additional guests.
Smoking Policy
The hotel is a completely smoke-free property. Smoking is prohibited in all guest rooms and indoor public areas.
Pet Policy
Pets and service animals are not permitted to stay at the hotel.
Tourism Tax & Local Levies
1. Tourism Tax for Foreign Guests: RM10 per room per night, effective from 1 January 2023, payable upon check-in. Guests holding a valid Malaysian Identity Card (MyKad) or MY PR Permanent Resident Card are exempted.
2. Penang Local Municipal Fee: RM3 per room per night, to be paid together with tourism tax by foreign guests at check-in.
Parking Policy
- Self-Parking: Private hotel car park, complimentary for in-house guests, no reservation required.
- Parking Bays: On-site private parking, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cancellation & Prepayment Policy
- Cancellation and prepayment terms vary according to room type / rate plan. Please read the detailed terms of the selected rate at the time of booking.
- A prepayment of 30% will be required at the time of booking for reservations of 3 rooms or more, or for bookings longer than 3 nights.
Group Bookings
Separate group policies and additional deposit requirements apply for bookings of more than 10 rooms in a single reservation. A deposit of 50% of the total bill will be required, and terms differ from individual guest bookings.
Dining Policies
- 1885 Restaurant: Fine-dining western restaurant, open for dinner only.
- Planters Lounge: Serves English Afternoon Tea, available for pre-booking by both in-house and non-staying guests.
- Pool Bar & The Farquhar Bar: Offer beverages and light bites.
- Outside Alcohol: Corkage fees will be charged for consuming personal alcoholic drinks in restaurants and public areas.

- WiFi: Complimentary high-speed WiFi throughout the hotel.
- Luggage Storage: Luggage storage available before check-in and after check-out.
